The spirit of the founder: How passion and purpose built a brand.
A new distillery, Cape Craft Lab, had a common challenge: two passionate owners, one brand. Matthew Beech, an award-winning distiller, and Alex Walker, his investor, both believed in the brand’s potential but couldn’t agree on its direction. My role was to align these strong personalities, and by listening to both, I identified a unified path for their brand in a competitive South African market.
The resulting brand strategy was deeply aligned with Matthew’s core values: community, sincerity, excellence, purity, and his love of nature. It was anchored by the ethos, “Turn on, tune in, drop out,” and guided by his personal mission to ensure customers “leave better off than when they arrived,” emphasising authentic distillation over industry shortcuts.
This commitment to quality and integrity aims to elevate the South African distilling landscape and cultivate a community of discerning consumers. By educating the public on what constitutes a superior product, the brand seeks to create a greater demand for them. Matthew believes that South African distilleries should operate as a community of mutual support and shared knowledge, rather than as competitors who conceal their processes from one another.
The brand's essence is distilled into three core pillars: Integrity, Connection, and Discovery:
Integrity

Inspired by Matthew's commitment to "stay true to myself, my methods, the natural world around me, and to each other," this pillar is all about authenticity. It also encompasses the idea of the brand spearheading a "purity law" with other South African distilleries.
Connection
EMBODY THE UNIQUE CHARACTER OF THE CAPE PENINSULA.
This pillar centres on a unique marketing approach: to embody the spirit of the Cape Peninsula. By positioning themselves as a gateway to the region's culture, they can create a distinct appeal to those seeking a genuine connection with something new. This approach guides the development of distinctive packaging and marketing strategies, ensuring the brand remains rooted in its unique local culture.
Discovery
FOSTER A CULTURE OF CONTINUOUS, COLLECTIVE GROWTH.
The distillery's bespoke tasting table embodies its ethos. As a tangible hub for community and discovery, it's where distillers, friends, and clients gather to sample and discuss products. This focus on continuous improvement and transparency builds both consumer confidence and loyalty. The unique table also serves as a portable brand centrepiece, creating a memorable presence at shows and conferences.
