How a kids programme at Grootbos creates lasting feelings of achievement & connection.
Grootbos Private Nature Reserve wanted to attract more families and better engage children. The challenge was to create a programme that would captivate young guests while staying true to the reserve’s core values and the African Explorers theme, which I helped them establish in 2016. This theme encourages adult guests to discover and learn about the area and unique Cape Floral Kingdom.
Working with a predetermined budget, the solution needed to be both creative and effective. Instead of a generic kids’ club, the idea was to empower children to become serious explorers, allowing them to emulate the adult experience but on their own terms.

My strategy was to gamify the initiative, making it fun and aspirational.
Facing the challenge of creating a compelling family program without the benefit of formal research, I improvised our customer profiling by borrowing the archetypes of three universally recognisable characters: Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley. This ensured our strategy was both relatable and effective.
These personas; the curious Pilgrim, knowledgeable Herald, and charismatic Scavenger, formed the basis of the programme’s design. This approach resonates with staff, framing the project around a clear goal: to create a deep sense of achievement, fulfilment, and inclusion for every child.
The programme is structured around three key activity tiers, each corresponding to a character archetype. To earn their rewards, children complete activities carefully selected and organised across six distinct areas of the reserve. On completion of each tier, children receive a unique badge, and upon earning all three, are assigned the ultimate "Grootbos Explorer" ambassador title.
This programme generates a considerable "nag factor" as children are motivated to complete the challenges, exploring all areas and activies Grootbos has on offer.
This positions Grootbos as an engaging destination for families, encouraging longer stays and repeat visits.
The programme's professional presentation demonstrates that Grootbos has a high-quality, established offering for children, allowing parents to relax while staff engage the kids, or to take the lead of their own family adventures.
The programme culminates in a heartfelt awards ceremony, serving as a testament to the children's journey and the bonds forged with the staff who have guided them.
The Scavenger Award celebrates curiosity, the Pilgrim Award recognises determination and respect, and the Herald Award champions conservation and communication.
A final Grootbos Explorer award crowns each child as a global ambassador for the Cape Floral Kingdom, reinforcing the reserve's core message. These ceremonies create a powerful emotional connection, built on shared adventures and personal mentorship that transcends a simple holiday.
Grootbos children become advocates who share their experience with others, inspiring new guests to visit.

A strong visual identity was crucial to bringing the programme to life. I commissioned a set of bespoke, hand-drawn illustrations to avoid the manufactured look of overly stylised, anthropomorphic imagery. This ensures that children respect and understand the difference between fantasy and the real natural world of the reserve.
The key benefit of these illustrations is their dual purpose: they are unique to Grootbos and scientifically accurate. We focused on the most distinctive features of each subject to help children easily identify them in real life.
This bespoke library of images ensures kids learn as they explore.
This illustration library is a valuable asset for Grootbos, used across a range of applications. From collateral like maps and badges to murals, the illustrations also bring to life notebooks and clothing that are sold as memorable keepsakes for children to take home, generating significant sales.
A comprehensive guideline document provides staff with the resources to easily source, use, and apply the illustrations correctly, ensuring the brand's identity and ethos remain consistent.

The programme has been a resounding success, leading to future expansion plans, and proving that a well-designed, thoughtful approach to a client's problem can create a tangible and lasting benefit for both the business and its guests.
